The man who dreamed about his electric sports

A professor from Cartagena has just presented Pure Car, an impressive convertible with an electric motor, made with his own hands. Meningitis is responsible for the most surprising electric car of the moment. And not only for its spectacular design or its features, but for the way it was conceived. The brands of cars have armies of specialized engineers for the development of their models. This one that concerns us, the Pure Car , only has a physical education teacher from Cartagena behind. But with a huge motivation, capable of achieving what seemed impossible.

Pure Car, a man’s dream

“I got sick right at the moment when I was organizing a sculpture exhibition,” says Carlos Rodríguez, jovial at 54. “I was very serious and, when I recovered, I reconsidered many things. To begin with, life is a sigh, and every time I had less time to fulfill my dreams. ” One of them was to create his own car. Rodriguez is joined by two passions: motorsport and design . Regarding the latter, I had studied a distance industrial design course by UNED. “They did not give any knowledge of engineering, so I had to read a lot about chassis, suspensions, engines …”.

The man who dreamed about his electric sports

This entrepreneur was clear about what the creation would be: a sports and convertible body, and an electric motor. ” I wanted my car to have a future, and that goes through electric mobility. Although my friends insisted again and again that I used a powerful gasoline engine , I had a broader scope. ” Undoubtedly, Rodriguez was a visionary: this was six years ago, when electric cars still looked like something very distant and niche. The Carthaginian hit the spot with his choice. First he drew the body on paper, then 3D on a computer. “I was inspired by BMW and Aston Martin models. But although some parts remember these brands, everything has a balance that gives it its own personality “. Next, he made it to real size, “on a huge piece of 10 cubic meters of porexpan , with hacksaw , as if it were a sculpture,” he describes. He also designed the interior of the two-seater himself.

The engine was purchased from a US company that offers kits to convert gasoline cars into electric cars. “It’s one of 70 HP, with 40 kWh batteries,” he explains. He also purchased the components for the chassis, a very simple one consisting of a longitudinal tube and suspensions based on those of a very popular sports car, the Mazda MX-5. When Rodriguez was about to finish his car, he received a call from the president of Marnys, a cosmetics and parapharmacy company. The businessman, passionate about cars, had seen him in a local television interview, and offered him a thousand square meter ship and all the necessary elements to finish his car.

The result is Pure Car, a sports appeal that is still a prototype. “It’s just a specimen sample, but although we’re going to keep the body, we’re going to change it completely inside,” Rodríguez explains. The final model will have a 100 kWh battery with an advanced cooling system based on the Tesla, and a 300 HP engine. The autonomy will reach 600 kilometers, and they expect the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in less than three seconds. The chassis will be totally new, with carbon components. The two entrepreneurs are now looking for financial partners to give the final push to the project . “Our market, for the moment, is the luxury one. We can not enter to compete directly with the generalist brands, and the truth is that today, apart from Tesla, there is no convertible electric roadster “, explains Rodríguez. “Now, if the experience goes well and we are successful we will expand the range, of course. So that driving an electric car is not something of a few. ” The entrepreneur concludes: “And if we do not succeed, as far as I’m concerned, I’ve already fulfilled my dream.”

Aerodynamic coefficient: we reveal the secret of energy efficiency

A lower resistance to air implies less consumption of electricity and, therefore, more autonomy. We tell you all about these two magic figures. The scientific definition of aerodynamic coefficient reads as follows: “It is one of the dimensionless numbers that are used for the study in aeronautics, automotive and other fields of forces and moments that undergoes any body moving in the air.” Simply put: measures the resistance of an object to the wind. In the case of a car, the less force it opposes, the lower energy consumption . That is why this figure is so important in the automotive industry, even more best car covers for outdoor storage.

Toyota Prius 2018

This is the reason why the first hybrid and electric vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius, were born with unusual designs: their bodies prevailed above all that the aerodynamic coefficient was as low as possible , and that, of course, influenced in its forms. To this day, electric cars have more and more similar designs with their petrol and diesel counterparts, thanks to resources such as using flat roofs, thinner wheels or suppressing the front grille. All these measures reduce the resistance to air. The aerodynamic coefficient is reflected with the letters Cx. In most of today’s series cars is between 0.25 (less air resistance) and 0.40 (higher, this is a number more typical of trucks). Some very specific models and prototypes that are designed come down to 0.20. Contrary to what you could imagine (due to its smaller size), the aerodynamic coefficient of motorcycles is higher than in cars and is usually around 0.60. This is the reason why many of the new electric scooters that are coming to market present very clean and simple designs, almost as if they were toys. Unless slits, pieces and aesthetic virguerías, less resistance to air.

The wind tunnel

To measure the coefficient, scale models are used that take advantage of dimension analysis techniques, but can also be calculated in a real size preserial model, inside a wind tunnel. This device with a name that would not have been out of tune in a Jules Verne novel, although it is highly sophisticated, is more than 300 years old. In 1746, the British engineer and mathematician Benjamin Robins presented a kind of tunnel, a rotating arm that developed speeds of several feet per second (between 4 and 5 kilometers per hour). Little by little it was perfected, and was used by illustrious names, such as the Wright brothers, pioneers of aviation.

Nasa transonic wind

Today, it is capable of simulating any real condition, however extreme, to be able to check the behavior of a car in front of winds of different strengths and its resistance to air.

The most aerodynamic cars in the world are electric

Finding out which vehicles offer less resistance to the wind is easy: it matches those with the least drag coefficient. Until today, the record is not held by a series car, but the prototype XL1 of Volkswagen, with which the brand wanted to demonstrate to what extent it can save fuel by optimizing aerodynamics: its aerodynamic coefficient is only 0 , 18 Cx.

Aerodynamics, fundamental for efficiency.

But if we talk about cars that do exist and roll on our roads, the electric and hybrid take the cake. The Tesla Model 3 has an aerodynamic coefficient of only 0.21 Cx, which explains, in part, that it helps the batteries that have to achieve autonomies that reach 500 kilometers . This low resistance to air has a great merit, if we take into account the size of the car, and especially its interior space, capable of housing five adults, which prevents to lower the height of the bodies (one of the resources for reduce the Cx).

Aerodynamics, fundamental for efficiency.

The aesthetics of the Toyota Prius always generated some controversy since the launch of the first generation. But the truth is that between tastes there is nothing written, and the Japanese brand has always prioritized the maximum efficiency in this model, to make the most of the charge of their batteries. The current version achieves a surprising Cx of only 0.24, exactly the same as the Model S, Tesla’s luxury saloon. Among the 10 vehicles with the lowest aerodynamic coefficient, he finds, like us, a sports hybrid. The BMW i8, capable of traveling certain distances only in electric mode, has a Cx of only 0.26 . Of course, in this case, the German engineers had it easier, because a sports car with these characteristics can be very low and almost stick to the ground, since the interior space is not among its priorities.
